The Abdulrahman-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled its national convention for March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja. This decision follows a recent court victory that nullified a rival faction’s convention held in Ibadan last year. The convention aims to elect a new National Working Committee and other statutory organs .
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has approved a timetable for party congresses nationwide, with ward and local government congresses scheduled for February and state congresses in March. The faction has urged members to remain united and committed to party unity.
The Abdulrahman-led faction claims to have the legitimate authority to hold the convention, citing a Federal High Court judgment in Ibadan that upheld their leadership structure. However, a rival faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has disputed this claim and has appealed the court ruling.
The ongoing internal crisis within the PDP has deepened divisions within the party, with both factions claiming legitimacy and accusing each other of undermining party unity. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has so far refrained from recognizing either faction outright.
The convention is seen as a critical step towards unifying the party and restoring internal discipline. The Abdulrahman-led faction has emphasized its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and reconciliation.
In preparation for the convention, the NEC has directed the National Caretaker Committee to activate Convention Sub-Committees and commence logistical, administrative, and consultative preparations. The party has also extended the tenure of all affected Caretaker Committees at the State and Zonal levels.
The outcome of the convention is expected to shape the party’s direction and competitiveness in future elections. Key figures, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, are backing the Abdulrahman-led faction.
The PDP’s internal crisis has raised concerns about the party’s ability to present a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections. .
