President Bola Tinubu has emphasized that the time for state police is now, stating that his administration will establish state police to curb insecurity in Nigeria. He made this vow while hosting state governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during an interfaith breaking of the fast, marking the beginning of Ramadan and Lent .
Tinubu stressed that security is the foundation of prosperity, and without it, farms cannot flourish, businesses cannot grow, and families cannot sleep in peace. He emphasized that establishing state police is not about politics, but about practicality and empowering states with the tools to protect their people while strengthening the national framework.
The President urged Nigerians to be bold enough to reform what is not working and united enough to protect what they hold dear. He expressed confidence that Nigeria will be safer and stronger with the establishment of state police.
Tinubu’s announcement has been seen as a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. The proposal for state police requires constitutional amendments, which demands approval by the National Assembly and endorsement by at least two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly.
The move has been welcomed by some, who argue that decentralizing policing powers will enable states to respond more effectively to local security threats. However, others have raised concerns about potential abuse by state governments and political actors .
Tinubu also used the occasion to urge governors to intensify grassroots engagement, particularly during the religious season observed by Muslims and Christians. He emphasized the need for development to reach local communities and vulnerable groups.
