Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and scholar Dr. Kola Oyewo has died at the age of 80, bringing to a close a career that spanned more than six decades in Nigeria’s theatre, film, and academic sectors. News of his passing broke on Friday, June 12, 2026, and was first announced by fellow actor Kunle Afod in an Instagram tribute.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 when he joined the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. That early start laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected careers in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood. He quickly distinguished himself for his discipline, cultural authenticity, and commanding stage presence.
Oyewo gained continental acclaim for his iconic portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s play _The Gods Are Not to Blame_. The role cemented his reputation across the African theatre scene and remains one of the most memorable performances in Nigerian stage history. On screen, he featured in seminal works including _Saworoide_, _Sango_, _Koseegbe_, and the popular television drama _Super Story.
Beyond entertainment, Oyewo was a dedicated academic. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, Elizade University, and the University of Ilorin. Through his teaching, mentorship, and research, he trained generations of actors, playwrights, and theatre scholars, shaping the intellectual backbone of Nigeria’s performing arts.
In April 2026, Oyewo spoke publicly about his health battle with prostate enlargement, explaining how the condition limited the kinds of roles he could take and kept him away from more demanding performances. He had celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026, just months before his passing.
His family confirmed his death with a statement shared by his son, Toyese Oyewo, describing him as “a wonderful man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched the lives of many”. A photo released by the family showed the late actor in his final moments, holding the hands of two relatives while seated. The family asked for prayers and support as they mourn his transition.
Tributes have poured in from across Nollywood and academia. Kunle Afod wrote, “His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come”. Colleagues remembered him as a cultural custodian whose influence extended far beyond stage and screen.
