Germany staged a dramatic late comeback to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 at Toronto Stadium on Saturday, June 20, sealing their place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a game to spare. Substitute Deniz Undav was the hero for Die Mannschaft, scoring twice in the second half to overturn a first-half deficit and end Germany’s run of group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022. The win also marked the first time Germany advanced from the World Cup group phase since their 2014 title triumph in Brazil.
Ivory Coast stunned the overwhelmingly pro-German crowd of 43,000 when they took the lead in the 30th minute. Teenage winger Yan Diomande burst down the left and cut back a low cross that Nathaniel Brown blocked, but the rebound fell to captain Franck Kessié who smashed it home from close range. The Elephants had been the better side for much of the first half, using pace and direct play through Diomande, Amad Diallo and Ange-Yoan Bonny to trouble Germany’s defense. Germany controlled possession but struggled to break through a compact Ivorian block, and had two goals ruled out before halftime for fouls on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann reshaped the game with a triple substitution in the 60th minute, bringing on Deniz Undav, Nadiem Amiri and Jamie Leweling for fresh attacking impetus. The changes paid off eight minutes later. Amiri delivered a precise cross and Undav controlled brilliantly before volleying emphatically past Fofana to level at 1-1 in the 68th minute. The VfB Stuttgart striker, who now has nine goals in 11 games for Germany, instantly gave Germany the direct, poaching threat they lacked in the first half.
Both teams created chances to win it after the equalizer. Fofana produced outstanding saves to deny Nathaniel Brown and Amiri, while Simon Adingra and Nicolas Pépé threatened for Ivory Coast. Just as the match looked destined for a draw, Germany struck in stoppage time. In the 90+4th minute, a marking error from Emmanuel Agbadou allowed Undav to receive a pass from Felix Nmecha, turn cleanly and fire a low finish into the bottom corner. The dramatic winner sparked wild celebrations on the German bench and sealed three points.
The victory put Germany top of Group E and made them the third team after hosts USA and Mexico to officially book a knockout spot at World Cup 2026. It was also a historic night for Manuel Neuer, who made his 21st World Cup appearance to become the goalkeeper with the most matches played in tournament history. Nagelsmann praised the “winning mentality” and team spirit, saying everyone who came off the bench was important and that Germany deserved the win after investing heavily throughout the game.
For Ivory Coast, the heartbreak leaves them needing a result against debutants Curaçao in their final group game to chase a first-ever World Cup knockout appearance. They had beaten Ecuador in their opener and looked on course for another upset until Undav’s late heroics. Germany, meanwhile, can now focus on securing top spot in Group E with their last match against Ecuador. Undav’s brace has also given Nagelsmann a major tactical dilemma, with the forward’s impact from the bench possibly earning him a start as Germany aim for a deep tournament run.
