In a significant step toward modernizing security operations, the Lagos State Government has intensified the use of drone surveillance across key locations in the state, introducing a new layer of intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and rapid response capability aimed at safeguarding one of Africa’s largest and most economically important cities.
The initiative, driven by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) under the leadership of its Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, and in partnership with security agencies, represents one of the most ambitious sub-national investments in aerial surveillance technology in Nigeria. Beyond enhancing public safety, the programme is also designed to strengthen economic stability, boost investor confidence, and support social order in Lagos State Lagos State, widely regarded as Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Speaking on the growing reliance on drone technology, Ogunsan explained that the state has moved beyond traditional patrol methods by adopting advanced aerial systems capable of monitoring activities across wide and difficult terrains. According to him, “we now have eyes in the sky,” noting that drones operate continuously to observe movements across the state and serve as a strong warning to criminal elements.
He emphasized that this shift reflects a global trend toward intelligence-led policing, where technology is used not only to respond to crime but to detect and prevent it before it occurs. The initiative, he added, is also meant to reassure law-abiding residents and businesses that Lagos remains firmly committed to public safety.
At a time when security agencies across Nigeria are confronting challenges such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, vandalism, and organized crime, Lagos has continued to strengthen its intelligence and operational capacity. Recent reports from the Lagos State Police Command Lagos State Police Command highlight increased recoveries of illegal weapons, stolen property, and arrests linked to various criminal activities, underscoring the growing role of technology in modern policing.
For a megacity exceeding 20 million residents, with dense urban districts, industrial zones, highways, and waterways, aerial surveillance has become a crucial tool for improving situational awareness, tracking suspicious activity, and coordinating faster security responses.
Ogunsan credited the progress of the initiative to the support of the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, describing him as a strong advocate of security investment and public safety. He also linked the state’s efforts to broader national security priorities championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He further revealed that the drone surveillance system has already produced measurable results. In one instance, aerial monitoring was used to investigate suspicious activity near Pan-Atlantic University following a viral video showing unidentified individuals near a forested area adjoining the institution. According to him, drone deployment assisted security operatives in conducting proactive surveillance and supporting police response in the area.
Ogunsan warned that individuals engaging in criminal activities should be aware that security monitoring in Lagos is now continuous and technology-driven. He stressed that surveillance coverage extends across both mainland and island areas of the state, ensuring no part is left unmonitored.
He added that drone operations are part of a broader, multi-layered security strategy that includes ground patrols, intelligence gathering, and community engagement efforts. “We have boots on the ground and eyes in the sky,” he noted, reinforcing the integrated nature of Lagos’ security framework.
As Lagos continues to expand in population and economic significance, the complexity of securing infrastructure, businesses, and communities continues to grow. However, the state’s investment in advanced surveillance technology signals a clear commitment to staying ahead of emerging threats.
