The Osun Development Association (ODA) has urged all political parties, candidates, their supporters, and other stakeholders in the political space to exercise restraint, show civility, and uphold respect for democratic values as political activities intensify ahead of the August Governorship Election in Osun State.
The Association, which is committed to peace, unity, and the sustainable development of Osun State, emphasized that elections should be a constructive competition of ideas, vision, and programmes aimed at advancing the progress of the State. It noted that elections must not be reduced to violence, intimidation, hate speech, or any conduct capable of threatening public peace and development.
Speaking on behalf of the Association, the Chairman of ODA, Dr. Segun Aina, OFR, stressed the need for peaceful conduct and issue-focused campaigns. He stated that Osun State has long been recognized as one of Nigeria’s most politically conscious and enlightened states, with citizens consistently demonstrating maturity in democratic participation. He warned against actions that could undermine this tradition, including inflammatory statements, provocation, and unnecessary tension.
Dr. Aina further encouraged all political actors to centre their campaigns on critical development issues such as economic growth, education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth employment, agriculture, security, and good governance. He added that personal attacks, misinformation, character assassination, and divisive narratives have no place in a healthy democracy.
The Association also appealed to supporters of various political parties to remember that elections are temporary, while the bonds of friendship, brotherhood, and community among the people of Osun State remain enduring. It stressed that no political ambition is worth the loss of lives or destruction of property.
ODA further called on key stakeholders as follows:
Political parties to sensitise and educate their members on peaceful and orderly conduct throughout the campaign period.
Community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations to continue promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
Security agencies to remain professional, impartial, and vigilant in safeguarding lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair, credible, and transparent election while maintaining neutrality and professionalism.
The media and social media users to act responsibly by verifying information before dissemination and avoiding fake news or content capable of inciting violence.
The Association reiterated that the future of Osun State depends not only on the outcome of the election but also on the conduct of the entire electoral process. It therefore called on all stakeholders to share responsibility in ensuring that the election strengthens, rather than weakens, democratic governance.
Dr. Aina further stated: “The ODA remains committed to supporting all efforts that promote peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development in Osun State. We encourage all eligible citizens to participate peacefully, make informed choices, and exercise their democratic rights without fear.”
He added: “Let us once again demonstrate that Osun State stands as a beacon of democratic maturity, political tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.”
He concluded: “Together, we can preserve peace, protect our democracy, and secure a brighter future for generations to come.”
To further strengthen electoral values, the Association announced plans to convene a summit of all political stakeholders in July 2026.
