The Nigeria Police Force has ruled out terrorism, sabotage, or the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the explosion that occurred on June 22, 2026, at No. 19 Way Street, Mushin, Lagos. Authorities confirmed that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure.
According to a statement reported by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disclosed the findings on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
He explained that a detailed forensic investigation carried out by the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit established that the explosion was not linked to any IED, terrorist activity, sabotage, or criminal use of explosives.
Initial reports had suggested the possibility of an explosive device, prompting the deployment of specialized EOD-CBRN experts to the scene for a full investigation. The probe involved inspection of the affected vehicle, analysis of recovered fragments, assessment of damage patterns, collection of physical evidence, and interviews with witnesses.
The Commissioner stated that investigators found no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or any blast characteristics typically associated with explosions of that nature.
He further noted that the vehicle did not show the kind of structural damage, fragmentation, crater formation, or displacement usually seen in explosive-related incidents.
Findings instead indicated that the explosion resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component within the vehicle, which led to a sudden release of energy. This caused the front passenger-side glass to shatter and resulted in minor injuries to an occupant.
Based on these conclusions, the police formally classified the incident as a mechanical explosion, rather than a suspected IED-related event.
The Command assured residents that there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, or any broader threat to public safety, adding that there is no cause for alarm.
However, the police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that all security incidents will undergo thorough professional investigation before conclusions are made.
