The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 135 suspected cultists and recovered 26 firearms during a coordinated intelligence-led operation aimed at preventing violence associated with the annual 7/7 cult celebrations across the state.
The operation reflects the Command’s proactive approach to crime prevention, recognising that effective policing is measured not only by responding to criminal acts but by disrupting threats before they materialise. In a densely populated commercial hub like Lagos, preventive security measures remain essential to protecting lives, maintaining public order and sustaining investor confidence.
The coordinated raids, conducted across identified criminal hideouts and black spots, were carried out on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani. The operation involved Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders and operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), following credible intelligence that rival cult groups were planning violent attacks and other criminal activities during the annual 7/7 cult celebration and initiation period.
In addition to the 26 firearms recovered, police operatives seized 16 dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, battle axes, daggers and knives. Other items recovered included cult insignia, assorted charms, 11 bottles of various alcoholic beverages, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs, as well as six mobile phones believed to be linked to the suspects.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), the operation formed part of the Command’s broader strategy to prevent cult-related violence and ensure the continued safety of residents. The statement noted that the action was taken to thwart intelligence indicating plans by rival cult groups to launch attacks and engage in criminal activities.
The Command further disclosed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal syndicates, adding that all suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The successful operation reinforces the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing, proactive crime prevention and the dismantling of criminal networks, while reaffirming its resolve to safeguard lives and property across the state.
