Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba,’ arrested by Delta Police over alleged rape case

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, widely known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman, Favour Agbro, whose tragic death has sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for justice.
The arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled from her hometown to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after the suspect reportedly invited her with a promise to mentor and support her career in content creation through a programme he promoted on social media.
Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the young woman was allegedly taken to a hotel shortly after arriving in Asaba, where the suspect is accused of sexually assaulting and physically abusing her.
According to the police, the victim later returned home deeply traumatised and disclosed the alleged incident to her parents. She subsequently recorded a video in which she narrated her ordeal and the emotional distress she experienced following the alleged assault.
Police said she later ingested a toxic substance and died despite efforts to save her. The video has since circulated widely on social media, triggering emotional reactions and demands for a thorough investigation.
The Command disclosed that upon receiving the petition, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to immediately commence a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
The police said detectives swiftly tracked down and arrested Ogbonna, adding that the suspect has made statements considered useful to investigators, while efforts continue to establish all the facts surrounding the incident.
Commissioner Oyeniyi assured the bereaved family and the public that the investigation would be thorough, transparent, and professionally handled.
“No aspect of the allegations will be overlooked. The Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that all necessary legal processes are followed in accordance with the law,” the Commissioner stated.
The police also appealed to members of the public with relevant information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
The incident has generated widespread concern across social media and beyond, with many Nigerians calling for justice for the deceased and stronger protection for young women seeking career opportunities. However, the police emphasised that investigations are still ongoing and urged the public to refrain from speculation while the legal process runs its course.
