Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has identified quality education and accessible healthcare as key pillars of his proposed roadmap for building a productive and prosperous Nigeria.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, stated this while unveiling the second phase of his “New Nigeria” roadmap in a post on his X account.
He recalled that in the first phase of the vision released on July 1, he outlined a broad framework focused on national renewal through human capital development, with emphasis on education, healthcare, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), character development, civic education, and strategic investments aimed at transforming Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one.
According to Obi, education and healthcare remain the foundation upon which successful nations are built, adding that these sectors provide the platform for citizens, regardless of background, to achieve their full potential.
He noted that global experiences have shown that countries with strong education systems and accessible healthcare services are better positioned for sustainable growth and development.
“Quality education and healthcare provide the ladder for individual upward mobility and drive economic growth for the nation,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor said his proposed reforms would focus on aligning Nigeria’s education system with national development priorities, using countries such as Singapore as examples of nations that have successfully leveraged education for economic transformation.
He added that his administration, if elected, would strengthen collaboration among the three tiers of government to ensure effective management of basic education at the community and local government levels.
Obi also proposed greater support for state governments to expand quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as well as secondary education through targeted grants and incentives.
On higher education, he said plans were being developed to enable Nigerian universities to focus more on specialised areas of teaching and research, making them globally competitive while producing graduates equipped with skills needed for the future economy.
He said further details of the New Nigeria roadmap would be unveiled in subsequent phases in the coming weeks and months.
