Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspected the Festac-Alakija Bridge following an alleged attempt by vandals to damage parts of the infrastructure, assuring residents that the bridge remains safe and structurally sound.
The governor carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas of the bridge alongside contractors, members of the State Executive Council and local government chairmen.
Photos shared by his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday showed Sanwo-Olu examining the bridge pillars during the inspection.
The governor reassured Lagos residents that there was no cause for panic, stating that the bridge was still fit for use despite the reported vandalism attempt.
Sanwo-Olu, however, issued a strong warning to those involved in vandalising public infrastructure, promising that offenders and individuals who purchase stolen government property would face the full weight of the law.
“Earlier today, I inspected the Alakija Bridge following an attempt by vandals to damage part of the structure. Let me reassure Lagosians that the bridge is safe, structurally sound and ready for use. There is no cause for alarm,” the governor said in a statement posted on his X handle.
He commended security agencies, including the Police, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), Task Force and Neighbourhood Safety Corps, for their swift response in securing the area.
According to the governor, some suspects linked to the incident have already been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved.
“Anyone who attempts to destroy public infrastructure in Lagos will face the full force of the law,” Sanwo-Olu warned, urging residents to play their part in protecting public assets.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor, noting that ongoing clean-up activities were already producing visible results.
The governor had earlier directed security agencies to investigate the vandalism incident and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, Sanwo-Olu described the act as “barbaric and criminal,” stressing that Lagos State would not tolerate any attempt to destroy government infrastructure.
