Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, representing Zamfara West, has received commendation for funding a N216 million scholarship programme supporting 2,055 indigent, orphaned and vulnerable students from the state.
The commendation came from Greater Tomorrow, a youth organisation, which described the initiative as a significant investment in the future of disadvantaged young people.
In a statement by its Director of Public Engagement, Victor Dogun, the group said the privately funded scheme covers tuition and registration fees for beneficiaries studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Beneficiaries also receive a monthly N15,000 stipend to assist with transportation and other incidental expenses. The programme covers students from all 14 local government areas of Zamfara State.
Greater Tomorrow said the initiative would help ensure that financial difficulties do not prevent vulnerable students from pursuing tertiary education.
The organisation urged other politicians and wealthy individuals to adopt similar initiatives by investing in education and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
It described education as essential to preparing young people for life and building a productive society, saying Yari’s intervention would help equip thousands of Zamfara indigenes for the future.
The group also called on governments at all levels to prioritise education and develop policies and programmes that improve the welfare and future prospects of citizens.
“Governance is supposed to be for public good,” the organisation said, urging public office holders to focus on initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to the people.
