Union Bank of Nigeria has achieved certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, a globally recognised framework for protecting payment card information. The certification became effective on August 11, 2026.
The PCI DSS standard provides technical and operational requirements aimed at securing environments where payment card data is stored, processed, or transmitted. The certification confirms that Union Bank’s systems meet global security requirements for safeguarding customers’ debit and credit card information, reducing risks associated with data breaches and payment fraud.
The assessment covered key areas of the Bank’s operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction processing, payment services, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback management, dispute resolution, and retail banking activities. Union Bank was certified under the Service Provider category.
The certification process followed a year-long assessment exercise involving quarterly reviews and collaboration among various departments and business units across the Bank, with support from cybersecurity firm Digital Encode. The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.
Commenting on the achievement, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said the certification highlights the Bank’s commitment to protecting customers’ information and ensuring that its payment systems meet internationally recognised security standards.
She noted that the achievement reflects the dedication of employees across the Bank who continue to uphold strong security practices and protect customer data.
The renewed certification also ensures that Union Bank maintains continuous PCI DSS compliance, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for financial institutions to sustain uninterrupted adherence to payment security standards.
