A 101-year-old woman, identified as Esther Ogunmabo, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ilisan, Ogun State, over alleged involvement in the sale of illicit drugs.
According to the NDLEA, Ogunmabo was arrested on August 15, 2026, after operatives allegedly found her with 90 grammes of cannabis packaged in small retail sachets.
The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement, saying the centenarian reportedly told investigators that she had turned to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire.
She reportedly told operatives that one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied the substance to her periodically, which she then sold in small quantities to people in the community.
The arrest was part of a series of operations conducted by the NDLEA across different parts of the country as the agency continues its efforts to curb the distribution and trafficking of illicit drugs.
However, the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s advanced age drew particular attention to the case. Following the arrest, the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), reportedly directed that Ogunmabo be granted bail and subjected to counselling.
The agency also disclosed that the woman’s daughter had been arrested in connection with the case.
The development highlights the agency’s continued focus on disrupting drug distribution networks while also taking the circumstances of vulnerable suspects into consideration.
The NDLEA has continued to intensify enforcement operations and public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing the circulation of illicit drugs and protecting communities from their harmful effects.
The case involving the centenarian also underscores the importance of addressing the economic and social circumstances that can contribute to vulnerable individuals becoming involved in unlawful activities.
