A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Ademiju Ayeni, has died following a stabbing incident during the convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, Osun State Chapter, in Osogbo.
Ayeni, a student of Estate Management, was reportedly involved in an altercation during the convention held at the Osun State NUJ Press Centre on Saturday.
According to sources who attended the event, the student sustained a stab wound during a confrontation. One source alleged that the incident involved a member of the convention’s security committee who was attempting to prevent Ayeni from gaining access to the venue.
The student was subsequently taken to a private hospital in Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited at the morgue of the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, while the incident was reported at the Dada Estate Police Station.
Confirming the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command was aware of the matter.
Ojelabi explained that there had been an earlier disagreement involving Ayeni and some individuals during the convention, but the dispute was reportedly resolved.
The police spokesperson said Ayeni later complained of chest pain after participants had dispersed and was taken to a hospital, where a stab wound was discovered.
He added that the deceased’s body had been deposited and that an autopsy would be conducted to assist the investigation. Police authorities had yet to confirm whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident at the time of reporting.
Meanwhile, the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, described the incident as allegedly cult-related, although the identity of the suspected perpetrator had not been established.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of students at gatherings and the need for effective security measures during student-related events.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding Ayeni’s death and determine those responsible for the incident.
