Lawmakers from Ideato North and Ideato South Local Government Areas of Imo State have endorsed Governor Hope Uzodimma as their preferred candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District seat in the 2027 elections.
The endorsement was made during a joint plenary session of the two legislative councils held at the Umuchima Bridge in Ideato, where the lawmakers expressed support for Uzodimma’s bid to represent the senatorial district.
The two local government areas are part of the Ideato axis and include Ogboko, the hometown of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, who has also been linked to the contest for the Imo West senatorial seat.
The lawmakers said their decision was influenced by what they described as the Uzodimma administration’s interventions in road construction, erosion control, security and other infrastructure projects across the area.
Leader of the Ideato South Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Onyenekezi, announced the council’s vote of confidence in Uzodimma and declared support for his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the senatorial district.
He also commended the administrations of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uzodimma, particularly over developments in infrastructure and security.
The lawmakers highlighted the ongoing reconstruction of the Umuchima Bridge and other road projects as evidence of what they described as the governor’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Ideato.
The Leader of the Ideato North Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Otuodi Ezeonuegbu, also commended the governor’s intervention in addressing erosion-related challenges in the area.
He said the projects had provided relief to communities that had previously faced difficulties caused by severe erosion and poor access roads.
The endorsement comes amid a closely watched political contest over the Imo West, also known as Orlu, senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Uzodimma, who is currently serving as governor of Imo State, has emerged as a major contender for the seat, while former Governor Rochas Okorocha has also expressed interest in the senatorial contest.
The development is expected to further intensify political activities in the Orlu Senatorial District as the 2027 elections draw closer.
