Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure re-election in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that a fragmented opposition would struggle to defeat the incumbent.
Wike made the assertion while speaking on the political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Rivers State governor maintained that the strength of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the political structure supporting President Tinubu would give the party a significant advantage going into the election.
His comments come amid ongoing efforts by opposition politicians and parties to build a broad coalition capable of challenging the APC in 2027.
Several opposition figures have been exploring possible alliances and political platforms, with discussions centred on presenting a common candidate to avoid splitting votes among multiple presidential contenders.
Wike’s position is that a divided opposition would make it difficult to consolidate enough electoral support to unseat Tinubu.
The debate over opposition unity has become a major feature of preparations for the 2027 election, particularly following the emergence of new political alignments and efforts by prominent opposition figures to work together.
President Tinubu, who won the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the APC, is expected to seek another term in office in 2027.
The opposition, meanwhile, faces the challenge of reconciling competing interests among its various political parties and prominent presidential hopefuls.
Political analysts have continued to argue that the ability of opposition parties to forge a credible alliance, agree on a widely acceptable candidate and develop an effective nationwide structure could significantly influence the competitiveness of the 2027 presidential contest.
Wike’s latest remarks therefore add to the growing political debate over whether the opposition can overcome its internal differences and mount a united challenge against the APC ahead of the election.
The 2027 presidential race is expected to become increasingly intense as political parties and aspirants intensify consultations, alignments and mobilisation across the country.
