American journalist, activist and pioneering women’s rights advocate Gloria Steinem has died at the age of 92, her foundation announced on Thursday.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Gloria’s Foundation said Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by loved ones. The foundation did not disclose the cause of her death.
Steinem began her journalism career in the 1960s before becoming one of the most influential figures in the global women’s rights movement. Early in her career, she gained attention for an investigative report exposing the sexism experienced by cocktail waitresses at New York’s Playboy Club.
She later described a 1969 meeting where women shared their experiences with abortion as a turning point in her feminist journey, after which she shifted from writing to public advocacy and public speaking.
For decades, Steinem travelled across the United States and around the world, participating in conferences, campaigns and demonstrations focused on gender equality and social justice.
In the 1970s, she co-founded Ms. Magazine and helped establish the National Women’s Political Caucus, while also playing a key role in organising the first National Women’s Conference in Houston.
Her foundation described her life as one dedicated to equality, noting that she continued advocating for social change until the end of her life.
“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard,” the foundation said, highlighting her compassion, curiosity and independent spirit.
