The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has presented cheques amounting to ₦2,317,177,094.00 to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The presentation, which took place on Thursday, September 3, 2026, was part of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to provide welfare support to families of officers who lost their lives in active service.
The beneficiaries are families of police officers covered under various insurance policy years, including 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025. The payment also covers outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after previous partial settlements.
Speaking during the ceremony, IGP Disu described the initiative as a demonstration of the Force’s commitment to the families of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
He noted that although no financial compensation could replace the loss of a loved one, the payment would provide meaningful support to the affected families while reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s responsibility towards the dependants of fallen officers.
The Police Chief acknowledged the difficult security environment in which officers operate across the country, stressing that many personnel continue to make sacrifices daily in the defence of lives and property.
He assured families of deceased officers that the Force would continue to prioritise their welfare and explore legitimate measures to support them and their dependants.
Reiterating that personnel welfare remains a key focus of his administration, IGP Disu said the Force would continue to implement initiatives aimed at improving working conditions, healthcare services, accommodation and other benefits for officers and their families.
He also directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify awareness campaigns across police commands and formations to ensure officers understand their insurance entitlements and the procedures for accessing them.
The Force Insurance Officer, ACP Lydia Ameh, commended the IGP for his support towards resolving outstanding insurance claims and improving access to benefits for police personnel and their families.
She said the recovery of pending entitlements and improved claims administration by the Force Insurance Unit demonstrate the commitment of the leadership to ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their rightful benefits.
ACP Ameh further pledged that the unit would continue to enhance the insurance process, increase awareness among personnel and protect the interests of police families.
The IGP also appreciated the cooperation of insurance partners and urged them to ensure timely payment of legitimate claims, noting that prompt settlements provide crucial assistance to families who have lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of its personnel and their families, while ensuring that the sacrifices of officers who died in service to the nation are remembered.
