Nigeria’s changing interest-rate environment and its implications for businesses, investors and households dominated discussions at the 22nd edition of the Alpha Morgan Economic Review.
The bi-monthly economic forum, held virtually on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, brought together industry stakeholders and investors to examine the latest developments in the economy and financial markets following the recent monetary policy shift.
Economic analyst and Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, featured at the session, where he examined the implications of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to cut the Monetary Policy Rate by 350 basis points, from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent.
The significant reduction in the benchmark rate was discussed in relation to its potential impact on savers, borrowers, businesses and investors, as the financial system adjusts to a lower interest-rate environment.
The review also examined the outlook for inflation and the naira, with participants considering how monetary policy changes could affect consumer demand, exchange-rate stability and broader economic conditions.
Another major issue was the decline in fixed-income yields. As returns on some fixed-income instruments adjust to the changing rate environment, the discussion highlighted increasing investor attention towards equities and other investment opportunities.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery public offer was also identified among the developments attracting interest in the equities and investment space.
For businesses, changes in interest rates can influence the cost and availability of credit, while investors and savers may need to reassess their financial decisions as returns across different asset classes evolve.
The discussions underscored the interconnected nature of monetary policy, inflation, exchange rates and investment markets, with developments in one area potentially influencing decisions across the wider economy.
The Alpha Morgan Economic Review is held every two months as part of Alpha Morgan Bank’s efforts to provide a platform for discussions on economic and financial developments affecting businesses and investors.
The 23rd edition of the review is scheduled to hold on November 25, 2026, when participants are expected to assess further developments in the Nigerian economy and financial markets.
