Verve, Africa’s leading domestic payment cards and tokens brand, is strengthening Nigeria’s digital payment ecosystem with the introduction of its Mobile Tap-to-Pay solution, offering consumers a faster, more convenient and secure way to pay for goods and services.
The rollout, which commenced in September 2026, marks a significant step in Verve’s deployment of tokenisation technology for mobile payments. The solution enables eligible Verve cardholders to digitise their cards through participating banks’ mobile banking applications and activate them for contactless payments at supported terminals.
The development represents an expansion of Verve’s payment offerings, moving beyond traditional physical cards to embrace emerging digital payment technologies. It also provides banks with opportunities to enhance their existing card services and deliver innovative payment experiences that meet evolving customer expectations.
With Mobile Tap-to-Pay, eligible customers can complete transactions by simply bringing their compatible smartphones or wearable devices close to supported contactless payment terminals. This eliminates the need to retrieve a physical card for every transaction while retaining the convenience associated with conventional contactless payments.
A major feature of the solution is tokenisation technology, which replaces sensitive card information with a digital token within an authorised payment environment. This approach helps protect underlying card details during transactions, supporting a more secure digital payment experience.
For Verve, the initiative represents a strategic extension of its payment capabilities, allowing customers to move conveniently between physical and digital payment channels. It also underscores the growing role of domestic payment infrastructure in adapting to technological advancements and changing consumer preferences.
The successful expansion of Mobile Tap-to-Pay will depend significantly on collaboration among payment schemes, financial institutions, merchants and technology providers. As more banks participate and contactless payment acceptance increases, these partnerships will be essential to extending the solution’s accessibility across Nigeria.
The introduction also gives consumers greater flexibility in choosing how they make payments. Customers can continue using their physical cards where preferred while embracing compatible mobile devices for transactions, depending on their needs and available payment facilities.
As digital financial services continue to evolve, convenience, security and widespread acceptance are expected to remain central to the future of payments.
Through its Mobile Tap-to-Pay initiative and collaboration with banking partners, Verve is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation, expanding payment choices for eligible customers and contributing to the advancement of Nigeria’s digital payment ecosystem.
