Bandits have reportedly attacked police officers travelling along the Sokoto–Gusau road in Zamfara State, leaving several officers feared dead, while others were allegedly abducted.
The incident occurred on Monday when the officers were travelling in a Zamfara State mass transit bus, popularly known as Bazamfara, heading towards Gusau, the state capital.
A source at the scene disclosed that some of the officers lost their lives during the attack. However, the exact number of casualties remained unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Sources within the police force revealed that the officers were travelling to provide security for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District, which is currently taking place in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The sources further alleged that some officers were abducted by the attackers, in addition to those reportedly killed during the ambush.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the attack, as well as the identities of the affected officers, remain unclear.
When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer said the command could not comment on the incident, explaining that the matter fell under the jurisdiction of the zonal command.
Meanwhile, the Zone 10 Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Ambursa, confirmed the attack but said he was in the hospital and unable to provide further details at the time.
He, however, promised that an official statement would be released later.
