Power Minister Gives 72-Hour Timeline for Gradual Restoration of Electricity Supply
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will gradually improve as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to address disruptions affecting households and businesses in parts of the country.
Tegbe gave the assurance in a statement on November 7, 2026, explaining that efforts were ongoing to restore affected generating units, with the first units expected to return to service within 48 to 72 hours of his November 6 update.
The disruptions have affected electricity supply across four states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leaving many households and businesses struggling with prolonged outages.
The Minister attributed the challenges to planned maintenance at the Egbin Power Station, gas supply constraints affecting some thermal power plants and the sabotage of critical electricity transmission infrastructure.
He explained that the combined challenges had reduced the volume of electricity available on the national grid, forcing grid operators to introduce load shedding in some locations to manage the limited supply.
Tegbe added that damage to key transmission lines had further complicated electricity distribution by restricting alternative routes for delivering power to affected communities, particularly in Lagos.
Acknowledging the difficulties faced by consumers, the Minister expressed concern over the impact of the outages on households, commercial activities and business operations.
He said the Ministry was working closely with relevant stakeholders across the electricity value chain to resolve the immediate challenges and ensure a gradual restoration of supply.
According to him, the affected generating units will be returned to operation in phases, while measures are being intensified to improve gas availability to thermal power plants and speed up repairs to damaged transmission infrastructure.
The Minister stressed that restoring electricity supply would require coordinated efforts across generation, gas supply and transmission to ensure that available generating capacity translates into improved electricity delivery to consumers.
He appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience and understanding while technical teams and relevant operators work to stabilise the national grid.
Tegbe also assured consumers that further updates would be provided as restoration efforts progress.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders in the power sector to overcome the current supply constraints and improve electricity delivery across affected areas.
