Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has expressed his views on the opposition coalition’s adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to Gbajabiamila, this development is a welcome move that will prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state. He shared his thoughts after casting his ballot in the Lagos State local government elections.
Gbajabiamila believes that the coalition will ensure some level of opposition, which is essential in a democracy. He emphasized that in every democracy, some level of opposition is necessary to provide checks and balances. Without opposition, a country can drift into a one-party state, which can have negative implications for governance and democracy. However, Gbajabiamila seemed uncertain about the coalition’s prospects, adding that he was not sure where it would go.

Gbajabiamila also commended the Lagos State local government elections, describing them as peaceful, quiet, free, and fair. However, he lamented the low voter turnout, emphasizing the need to sensitize and educate people about grassroots governance. According to him, it is essential to encourage citizens to participate in local government elections, as these elections have a significant impact on their daily lives.
