The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) is taking a firm stance against officers who issue passports to non-citizens. Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap emphasized that officers found guilty of this offense will face disciplinary action, stating, “We’ll make sure that we prosecute them. They will not go free, not anymore. It is not acceptable”.
This crackdown is in response to a probe by the House of Representatives, which uncovered approximately 7,000 suspected cases of passport issuance to non-Nigerians over five years. These cases have raised concerns about national security, human trafficking, and illegal migration.
To obtain a Nigerian passport, applicants must provide proof of citizenship, which will be thoroughly verified by immigration officers. Officers who issue passports to non-citizens will face prosecution and potential penalties, ensuring the integrity of the passport issuance process.
The NIS is implementing stricter vetting procedures and security checks to prevent abuse and ensure that passports are issued only to qualified Nigerian citizens. This move aims to restore the credibility of Nigeria’s passport system and prevent its misuse for criminal activities or illegal migration.
