The Nigerian passport has climbed to its highest ranking in five years, reaching 88th place out of 199 countries in the Henley Passport Index. This ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) and expert analysis on global passport strength. The improvement is a significant milestone for Nigeria, reflecting the country’s efforts to enhance its passport security features and streamline the application process.
Nigeria’s passport ranking has shown a steady upward trend, rising from 103rd in 2021 to 98th in 2022, and then to 88th in 2025. This progress indicates a growing global mobility for Nigerian citizens, although challenges persist. Despite the improved ranking, Nigerian passport holders still face significant travel restrictions, with visa-free access to only 45 countries.
In comparison to other African countries, Nigeria’s ranking surpasses six nations, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia. Seychelles retains its position as Africa’s most powerful passport, ranking 24th globally with access to 156 nations. The global rankings are topped by Singapore, which holds access to 193 nations, while Afghanistan ranks last with access to 25 countries. The United States has dropped to 10th place, and the UK ranks 6th.
The Henley Passport Index provides a comprehensive ranking of global passports, highlighting the varying degrees of travel freedom enjoyed by citizens of different countries. For Nigeria, the improved ranking is a positive development, reflecting the country’s growing international influence and diplomatic efforts.
