Seven members of the National Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defectors include four senators and three members of the House of Representatives.
The senators who dumped PDP for APC are Sampson Ekong, representing Akwa Ibom South; Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East; Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East; and Olubiyi Fadeyi, representing Osun Central.
The House of Representatives members who defected are Taofeek Ajilesoro, representing Ife Central/East/North/South federal constituency of Osun State; Omirin Olusanya, representing Atakunmosa East/West and Ilesha East/West federal constituency of Osun State; and Marcus Onobun, representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency of Edo State.
The defectors cited various reasons for their decision, including internal divisions within the PDP and the party’s inability to deliver meaningful development to their constituencies. Some also mentioned their desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians. The defections are seen as a significant blow to the PDP, potentially impacting its viability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC has welcomed the new members, expressing hope that their experience will strengthen the party. The defections have sparked reactions across the political divide, with some analysts speculating about the potential implications for the balance of power in the National Assembly.
