Sunday Igboho, a prominent Yoruba nation activist, has returned to Nigeria from Germany and is calling on the Federal Government to remove his name from the wanted list. He believes he is not a criminal and shouldn’t be treated as such. Igboho’s name was put on the list during the Muhammadu Buhari administration, allegedly due to his activism for Yoruba nation independence.
Igboho wants the Federal Government to clear his name, citing that his activism isn’t a crime. He expressed fear for his life, stating that his inability to access his bank accounts and obtain a Nigerian passport hinders his freedom. This restriction, he claims, makes him vulnerable to security threats.
The Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olusola Alao, has backed Igboho’s plea, describing him as a true patriot who contributed to the emergence of a Yoruba president. Oba Alao believes Igboho’s activism stems from his love for the Yoruba nation and its people. He also recommended Igboho for a leadership role in the Southwest’s security framework, believing he would be well-suited for the responsibility.
Igboho’s troubles with the government began when his residence was raided by the Department of State Services (DSS) in July 2021, leading to the deaths of two of his associates and the arrest of thirteen others. He has since been living in exile, recently returning to Nigeria.
He’s also urged the government to prioritize security in the Southwest region, suggesting that capable individuals be appointed to oversee safety. Igboho remains committed to his activism, emphasizing the need for true freedom and security for the Yoruba people. He believes that removing his name from the wanted list would be a step towards normalcy and allow him to contribute more effectively to the region’s security and development.
