The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the Federal Government has freed over 4,000 inmates from correctional facilities as part of decongestion efforts. This initiative aimed to identify and release detainees held for minor fines, which ultimately saved the government N1 billion in inmate feeding costs.
The release of 4,082 inmates was made possible after a detailed analysis revealed that many were detained for petty fines. The Minister collaborated with the private sector to raise over N500 million, which was used to pay off the fines imposed on the inmates. Many of these inmates had remained in prison due to their inability to pay fines as little as N5,000.
This initiative resulted in a 5% reduction in overcrowding in correctional centers. The Minister’s efforts have also led to significant achievements in other areas, including a crackdown on illegal oil activities. The Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad destroyed over 2,125 illegal refineries and oil dumps, confiscated nearly 205 trucks transporting illegally refined petroleum products, and apprehended more than 700 suspects involved in these crimes.
The squad also secured 345 convictions, with 187 cases still pending in court. The Minister’s efforts have been focused on reforming the correctional system and promoting justice and fairness. The release of the inmates has brought relief to many families and communities, and has highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and private sector in addressing social issues.
