Morocco has filed a petition to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) questioning the eligibility of two Nigerian players, Ashleigh Plumptre and Michelle Alozie, who played in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. The Super Falcons won the title by defeating Morocco 3-2, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to secure their 10th WAFCON crown.
The Moroccan team claims that the manner of Plumptre and Alozie’s switch of nationality is faulty, citing irregularities in their claims to be Nigerians. Ashleigh Plumptre was granted approval by FIFA to play for Nigeria in 2021 after it was established that her paternal grandfather is a Nigerian. Michelle Alozie, on the other hand, was born in the United States to immigrant parents from Nigeria.
The Moroccan football federation is contesting the eligibility of these players, arguing that their involvement in the tournament was unfair. Despite the protest, Nigeria’s team seems unbothered, with a top member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) describing Morocco’s complaint as lacking merit.
