Omotenioye-Majekodunmi
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), succeeding Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who was the pioneer head of the Council appointed in June 2024. Majekodunmi’s appointment underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental imperative and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.
Majekodunmi is a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience working with global and national institutions on renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance. She previously served as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser, playing a key role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and international engagements.

Her expertise in climate finance and governance will be crucial in driving Nigeria’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and achieve sustainable development.
The National Council on Climate Change is responsible for formulating policies towards achieving green growth and sustainable economic development for Nigeria, addressing the impacts of climate change. The Council was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on September 28, 2022, marking the commencement of the implementation of the Climate Change Act 2021.
President Tinubu thanked Dr. Madueke for her dedicated service, noting her role in laying a strong foundation for the Council’s ongoing work. Majekodunmi’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to drive Nigeria’s climate change agenda forward, leveraging her expertise to promote sustainable development and environmental resilience in the country.
The appointment is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to address climate change, promoting a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to economic development. With Majekodunmi at the helm, the NCCC is poised to play a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and promoting a low-carbon economy.
