Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, were among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The incident occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while the helicopter was en route to Obuasi.
The helicopter, a Z-9 model operated by the Ghana Air Force, lost contact with radar shortly after takeoff from Accra at 9:12 a.m. GMT. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, where they found the wreckage engulfed in flames. All eight people on board were confirmed dead, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Ghanaian government has declared a period of national mourning, with all flags flying at half-mast until further notice. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah conveyed official condolences, saying, “The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country.” An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway, with possible causes including adverse weather conditions or mechanical failure.
