The Nigeria Customs Service is reviewing licensing renewal fees for customs agents, with the new structure set to take effect in January 2026. This move aims to reflect prevailing economic realities, including exchange rate fluctuations, and ensure only compliant, competent, and trustworthy agents operate within the system. The review is part of broader modernization efforts targeted at repositioning the NCS to meet the evolving needs of international trade and border management.
According to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, the planned review will create a more transparent, predictable, and efficient licensing regime that will ultimately benefit legitimate operators and the trading public. The NCS has commenced consultations with key industry stakeholders, including the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria, and the Customs Consultative Committee .
The current renewal fee is N200,000, while fresh license costs N500,000, with a processing fee of N15,000. However, the NCS has planned an upward review of the current renewal fee, citing new economic realities that make the current fee unrealistic. Agents who comply with the new licensing structure will enjoy premium facilitation measures, including faster processing timelines, improved engagement channels with customs officers, and enhanced integration with the Service’s upgraded digital platforms.
The NCS emphasizes that the review forms part of broader modernization efforts targeted at repositioning the NCS to meet the evolving needs of international trade and border management. The Service reiterates its dedication to fairness, transparency, and the promotion of a secure, competitive, and efficient trading environment in Nigeria. Feedback from industry associations, individual operators, and relevant government agencies will be carefully considered before the finalization and implementation of the review.
