The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has corrected errors in the 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) results, significantly improving the pass rate. Initially, 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32%, were reported to have obtained a minimum of five credits covering core subjects, including English and Mathematics. However, after re-grading, the number has increased to 1,239,884 candidates, representing 62.96% of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the exam.
The correction shows a substantial jump in the pass rate, with 1,239,884 candidates now meeting the benchmark for admission into tertiary institutions. WAEC attributed the discrepancy to errors in grading serialized objective questions, specifically a wrong code file used in scoring the English Language Objective Test (Paper 3), resulting in incorrect marking. Candidates who took the exams via computer-based mode were not affected by the error.
WAEC has apologized for the mistake, expressing regret for the emotional and mental distress caused to candidates and stakeholders. The council has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and accuracy in its examination processes. Candidates can now access their updated results on the WAEC portal ((link unavailable)), and digital certificates will be available within 48 hours after confirmation.
The updated results will enable candidates to meet the requirements for admission into tertiary institutions, and the correction has brought relief to many students who were initially worried about their performance. WAEC’s commitment to accuracy and transparency in its examination processes is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the SSCE, and the council’s efforts to rectify the error demonstrate its dedication to ensuring fairness and justice for all candidates.
