The Federal Government of Nigeria has welcomed the conviction of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra agitator, by a Finnish court as a significant victory in the country’s fight against terrorism. Ekpa was sentenced to six years in prison for terrorism-related crimes, including promoting terrorist acts, participating in the activities of a terrorist organization, inciting the public to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, and aggravated tax fraud.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Ekpa’s conviction is a major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror. The government sees this development as a testament to growing international cooperation in tackling terrorism and violent extremism linked to separatist movements.
Ekpa was found guilty of exploiting his large social media following to incite unrest in Nigeria’s southeast between August 2021 and November 2024. The Finnish court’s verdict demonstrates collaboration between nations in combating terrorism, as Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024 and later designated a “terrorism financier” by the Nigerian government in March 2025.
As a self-proclaimed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ekpa’s conviction marks a significant blow to the group’s activities.
