Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, recently led Nigeria’s delegation to the 42nd Session of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly in Montreal, Canada. During the event, Keyamo held bilateral meetings with counterparts from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Japan, Canada, and India.
These meetings centered on key issues affecting member countries and cooperation strategies ahead of the upcoming ICAO Council elections. Keyamo explored ways to strengthen aviation partnerships and tackle common challenges with Japan, while discussions with Canada focused on building stronger collaborations and exploring strategic alliances. With India, Keyamo discussed ways to enhance cooperation and support for Nigeria’s re-election into the ICAO Council.
Keyamo’s primary objective was to solicit international support for Nigeria’s re-election into Part 2 of the ICAO Council, which comprises countries making significant contributions to international aviation infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of global partnerships in advancing aviation development, safety oversight, and innovation in Nigeria’s aviation industry. By collaborating with other nations, Nigeria aims to enhance its aviation sector and contribute meaningfully to regional and international connectivity.
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ICAO’s environmental goals, including submitting a state action plan on carbon emission reduction and participating in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable aviation practices and reducing its environmental footprint.
As part of the outcomes and future plans, Keyamo invited ICAO Council members to attend the Nigerian International Airshow, scheduled for December 2-4, 2025, in Abuja. This event aims to showcase Nigeria’s progress and collaboration in the aviation industry. Additionally, Nigeria will host the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organisation (BAGASOO), a regional safety oversight organization, and has pledged to continue supporting its activities .
Keyamo’s efforts underscore Nigeria’s commitment to safe, secure, and sustainable global air transport. By strengthening international partnerships and investing in aviation infrastructure, Nigeria is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of global aviation.
