Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in a grand traditional ceremony held at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area of Oyo State. The coronation ceremony, which took place on September 26, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Ibadan’s history, with Ladoja becoming the first former governor, senator, and successful businessman to ascend to the throne.
The traditional coronation ceremony began with Ladoja receiving the symbolic Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba, an essential rite in the coronation process of an Olubadan. He was then crowned at the Ose Meji Temple, amidst chants, drumming, and traditional prayers. The event drew hundreds of guests and residents clad in vibrant attire, including dignitaries such as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who cut short his annual leave to attend the coronation .
Ladoja’s emergence as the 44th Olubadan follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025. As a respected businessman, politician, and elder statesman, Ladoja’s ascension to the throne is seen as a significant milestone in Ibadan’s history. His wealth of experience and leadership qualities are expected to play a vital role in promoting Ibadan’s cultural heritage and unity .
The coronation ceremony was held under tight security, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and personnel from the Nigerian Army deployed to ensure a hitch-free ceremony. Ladoja is expected to be formally presented with the staff of office by Governor Seyi Makinde at the historic Mapo Hall. The Olubadan stool is revered for its unique and orderly succession system, which distinguishes it among traditional institutions in Nigeria.
As the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Ladoja faces the delicate task of balancing tradition with modernity. His background as a politician and administrator may shape his reign, and citizens expect unity, security, and cultural pride under his leadership. The coronation signals a turning point for Ibadan, with many residents hopeful that Ladoja’s rule will bring development, peace, and prosperity to the city.
