US President Donald Trump has arrived in Israel to mark the beginning of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which includes the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The agreement, facilitated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar, aims to end the two-year conflict in Gaza.
Seven Israeli hostages were freed earlier today and are among approximately 20 believed to be alive and slated for release in the initial phase. The hostages will undergo medical evaluations before being reunited with their families. The release is part of a larger agreement that includes the freedom of 250 Palestinians serving life sentences.
Trump is expected to address the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as hold private meetings with families of hostages. After Israel, Trump will travel to Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh resort for a high-level summit with over 20 world leaders to discuss Gaza’s long-term recovery, governance, and security.
The ceasefire agreement is seen as a significant step towards peace, but challenges lie ahead in achieving a lasting resolution. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that once the hostages are back, the military would proceed to destroy Hamas’ underground tunnel network in Gaza. The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement on both sides.
Palestinian analyst Akram Attallah said the Trump plan was crafted to favor Israel, allowing it to dictate terms and shift blame. The agreement’s success will depend on global commitments and the willingness of both parties to work towards a lasting peace. The UN has welcomed the ceasefire and urged Israel to increase humanitarian access to Gaza as rebuilding efforts begin.
