Flooding
By Olamilekan Abayomi
The Ogun State Government has issued a flood alert for residents living near riverbanks and wetlands due to the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam. This release is expected to cause overflow in some areas, particularly those along the Ogun River. Residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and relocate to higher grounds to prevent loss of life and property.
The flood alert affects several communities, including Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and parts of Abeokuta, specifically Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo. These areas are prone to flooding due to their proximity to the river and low-lying terrain.
Heavy rainfall in the northern parts of the country has increased the volume of water flowing into the Oyan Dam, necessitating the controlled release. The Ogun River’s flow is also affected by the tidal lock caused by the Lagos Lagoon, which can exacerbate flooding. To mitigate the impact, the state government, in collaboration with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, has been dredging and opening up more tributaries of the Ogun River.
The government is closely monitoring the situation and has put in place warning systems to alert residents of potential flooding. Residents are advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and property. The government urges everyone to cooperate and follow the instructions of the authorities to ensure safety.
In recent years, Ogun State has experienced severe flooding, causing significant damage to properties and displacement of people. The government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding include infrastructure development and emergency response measures. However, residents are still advised to remain cautious and prepared for any eventuality.
