US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the country from 66 international organisations, citing that they “no longer serve American interests”. This move is part of Trump’s “America First” agenda, aiming to restore American sovereignty and end taxpayer funding for organisations deemed wasteful or hostile.
The 66 organisations include 31 United Nations entities and 35 non-UN organisations, focusing on climate, labour, migration, and other issues Trump considers “woke” initiatives. Some notable organisations being exited include the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Population Fund, UN Women, and the International Solar Alliance.
Trump’s administration argues these organisations promote radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs conflicting with US sovereignty and economic strength. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities advancing globalist agendas over US priorities.
Critics warn this move will weaken global cooperation on climate change, public health, and development. The US withdrawal from the UNFCCC, in particular, may hinder international efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and address extreme weather events.
The Trump administration has already withdrawn from several international organisations, including the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and the Paris Climate Agreement. This latest move reflects Trump’s long-standing wariness of multilateral institutions.
The White House claims the withdrawals will save taxpayer money and refocus resources on America First priorities. However, experts argue this approach may isolate the US and reduce its influence on global issues.
The UN and other international organisations have yet to comment on the US withdrawal. Meanwhile, Pacific Island nations are concerned about the impact on environmental protection and US influence in the region.
