Distinguished legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, has added another remarkable achievement to his distinguished career after earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from Babcock University.
Speaking after the university’s 2026 convocation ceremony held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Dr. Ubani declared that his academic journey is far from complete, revealing that his next ambition is to attain the rank of professor through active engagement in teaching and research.
Dr. Ubani was among a select group of scholars awarded doctoral degrees during the colourful convocation ceremony, which celebrated academic excellence, groundbreaking research and innovation. The event attracted government officials, members of the Bench and Bar, academics, family members and well-wishers from across the country, the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) reports.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who attended the ceremony as a special guest, congratulated the graduating students on their academic accomplishments and urged them to channel their knowledge, expertise and research towards national development. He also commended Babcock University for its unwavering commitment to quality education, impactful research and the production of highly skilled professionals.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, described the convocation as a celebration of discipline, sacrifice, resilience and scholarly excellence.
He noted that earning a PhD represents years of rigorous research, critical inquiry and unwavering dedication to knowledge, emphasizing that the accomplishment reflects not only the determination of the graduates but also the invaluable support of supervisors, lecturers, families, friends and the broader academic community.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the newly conferred doctoral graduates now bear the responsibility of advancing public policy, professional practice and national development through research, innovation and the continuous pursuit of knowledge.
One of the major highlights of the ceremony was the conferment of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law on Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, whose latest academic feat further strengthens his standing as one of Nigeria’s leading legal practitioners and a strong advocate of lifelong learning.
Addressing journalists shortly after the ceremony, an elated Dr. Ubani described the doctoral programme as one of the most intellectually demanding experiences of his life.
“The journey does not end with the graduation ceremony. There are still administrative processes to complete. It is a very rigorous journey, but it is worth every sacrifice,” he said.
Encouraging professionals across various disciplines, including journalists, to embrace higher education, he described the PhD as “the last bus stop of knowledge.”
“I recommend a PhD for everyone, including journalists, if you can. It is a worthwhile experience that broadens your knowledge and perspective,” he added.
Despite attaining one of the highest academic qualifications, Dr. Ubani said he remains committed to further scholarly advancement.
“The next step is professorship. I’m going for it. I want to begin lecturing. Once I secure a university appointment, I will devote more time to writing. I believe I write even better than I speak. By God’s grace, I have become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, I have become a doctor, and I also hope to become a professor,” he stated.
Offering words of encouragement to young Nigerians, Dr. Ubani urged them to pursue their dreams with perseverance, diligence and unwavering faith in God.
“My message to the younger generation is that they must persevere. Above all, they must know God. With God in your life, there is nothing you cannot achieve,” he said.
He also expressed profound appreciation to his family, mentors, colleagues and friends for their steadfast support throughout his doctoral journey, describing the achievement as a product of God’s grace, hard work and the encouragement of those who believed in him.
The convocation ceremony concluded with the formal conferment of doctoral degrees on successful candidates as Babcock University charged the new PhD holders to uphold the highest standards of scholarship, integrity and service while applying their research to address societal challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development.
