The Department of State Services (DSS) has suspended the prosecution of activist and politician Omoyele Sowore over alleged cybercrime offences until after the 2027 general election.
The development followed proceedings concerning posts made by Sowore on his X account and Facebook page in August 2025, in which he referred to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in derogatory terms.
The DSS had approached the court in connection with the matter, including seeking a determination on whether the publications constituted offences under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws.
However, the agency has now put the prosecution on hold until after the 2027 election, according to reports published on Sunday.
The decision comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, with Sowore remaining an outspoken critic of the Federal Government.
Sowore, who has previously contested the presidency, has frequently criticised government policies and actions through his social media platforms and public statements.
The suspension means that further proceedings in the cybercrime case will not continue immediately, with the matter expected to receive renewed attention after the 2027 electoral cycle.
The development is likely to generate further public debate, particularly regarding the balance between the enforcement of cybercrime laws and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
