The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has issued a strong warning against energy theft and meter tampering, directing relevant stakeholders to collaborate on a transparent, science-based investigation into power losses along the 132kV Ikorodu–Sagamu corridor.
The directive followed reports of significant losses on the corridor, with as much as 100MW of electricity reportedly unaccounted for. Monitoring data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) estimates that the losses could cost the country approximately N120 billion annually.
Tegbe gave the directive on Friday during a meeting with industrial operators along the corridor, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister stressed the need for all relevant stakeholders to work collectively to identify the sources of the losses and implement effective measures to curb energy theft and other forms of electricity-related malpractice.
The meeting was attended by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer and Executive Directors of NISO, representatives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), as well as the Managing Directors of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Ikeja Electric.
