No fewer than 14 candidates from different political parties are set to challenge Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, in the 2027 governorship election as they seek to take control of the Government House.
The development was contained in the list of governorship candidates displayed yesterday at the Enugu State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The document provides the personal details and credentials of the 15 candidates vying for the state’s highest political office. Mbah, the incumbent governor, is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among those challenging him is Chief Uchenna Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Other notable contenders include Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Obodoeze Ocho of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The INEC list also names Mr Edwin Alor as the Accord candidate; Prof. Jehu Nnaji of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP); Mr Okwudilichukwu Ugwu of the Labour Party (LP); and Mr Nnamdi Ugwu of the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA).
Other candidates include Mr Anthony Udeani of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Mr Afamefuna Ani of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Mr Elvis Ugwoke of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr Friday Iloka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Mr Nnamdi Omeje of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), and Mr Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Chief Obioma Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) Party completes the list of 15 candidates contesting the governorship election.
Political activities have intensified across the state, with candidates and their supporters reportedly stepping up consultations with stakeholders, political leaders and elder statesmen ahead of the 2027 poll.
Governor Mbah is expected to base his re-election campaign largely on the projects and social intervention programmes implemented by his administration. His government is expected to highlight what officials describe as verifiable projects and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents.
With 15 candidates now listed for the contest, the 2027 Enugu governorship election is shaping up to be a competitive race, with Mbah facing a broad field of challengers seeking to wrest control of the state from the APC.
