The House of Representatives has dissolved all its Ad Hoc Committees with immediate effect, directing members of the affected committees to discontinue all activities being conducted under their names.
The directive was issued by the Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, in a notice addressed to the chairmen and members of the affected committees. The statement was signed by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Sidi Ibrahim.
According to the notice, the decision followed previous directives urging the committees to complete their assignments and submit their reports in accordance with the rules and established procedures of the House.
The Clerk explained that only two Ad Hoc Committees had requested and received extensions of time under Order 18, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders of the House. However, the two-week extension granted to the committees had expired.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Honourable Members are reminded that Ad Hoc Committees are temporary committees of the House established for specific and time-bound mandates. They are not intended to continue indefinitely beyond the purpose and duration for which they were created,” the statement noted.
The House further referenced Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of its Standing Orders, which outlines limitations on the timeframe for the submission of committee reports.
It stated that since the committees had exceeded the approved timeframe for completing their assignments, their continued existence was no longer sustainable.
The dissolution takes effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, with all activities being carried out in the name of the Ad Hoc Committees expected to stop immediately.
Chairmen of the affected committees were also instructed to submit all pending reports, working documents, records, and other materials related to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives for proper custody.
The statement urged all members to take note of the directive and ensure full compliance.
