The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disclosed plans by his campaign team to establish an independent system for transmitting election results from polling units to its situation room during the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made this known during an interview with ARISE News, where he outlined measures he said his team intends to put in place to monitor the counting, recording and transmission of votes during the election.
The former Anambra State governor said the proposed system would operate alongside the official result-transmission process of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the arrangement would enable his team to independently receive results from polling units and compare them with figures transmitted through the official electoral system.
Obi said the objective was to ensure that results recorded at polling units were properly documented and that the figures eventually announced accurately reflected the votes cast.
He explained that his team intended to have a dual transmission arrangement, with results sent through the designated INEC channel while another copy was transmitted to its own situation room for monitoring and verification.
Obi said the initiative would provide an additional mechanism for tracking results from the grassroots and identifying any discrepancies that might emerge during the collation process.
He also expressed confidence that other organisations could adopt similar systems to independently monitor the election and ensure greater transparency.
The NDC candidate stressed that the focus should be on ensuring that the outcome of the election reflected the actual votes recorded at polling units.
Obi’s comments come as political parties and other stakeholders intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with electronic transmission of results and independent election monitoring expected to remain important issues in discussions on electoral transparency.
If implemented, the proposed system would give Obi’s team an independent stream of polling-unit results that could be compared with officially transmitted figures during the electoral process.
