Nigerians living abroad are increasingly exploring ways to manage their finances, preserve savings and earn returns on money earmarked for future commitments in the country.
With many diaspora customers earning in foreign currencies while maintaining financial obligations in Nigeria,
opportunities to grow savings without immediately converting them into naira are becoming increasingly important.
According to figures cited in the original report, personal remittances received by Nigeria reached approximately $22.8 billion in 2025, representing about 7.8 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Central Bank of Nigeria data also put workers’ remittances at $5.24 billion in the third quarter of the same year.
The figures highlight the significance of diaspora financial inflows and the growing need for banking solutions that support long-term savings, investment planning and wealth management.
From Remittances to Wealth Creation
Traditionally, diaspora banking has focused largely on helping Nigerians abroad send money home securely and conveniently. However, the financial needs of this customer segment now extend beyond remittances.
Many Nigerians abroad are saving towards property purchases, education, business investments, retirement and other long-term commitments in Nigeria. These goals often require flexible financial products that allow them to manage funds in different currencies while earning returns.
To address these needs, Fidelity Bank has refreshed its Diaspora Fixed Deposit proposition, offering eligible customers opportunities to earn interest on funds set aside for future use.
The product allows customers to place deposits in naira, US dollars, British pounds or euros, providing options for individuals whose earnings, savings and financial obligations span different currencies.
Flexible Deposit Tenors and Competitive Rates
Under the proposition, naira fixed deposits are available for tenors of 30, 60, 90, 180 and 365 days. Deposits in US dollars, British pounds and euros are available for 30, 60, 90 and 180 days.
The bank offers interest rates of up to 12.5 per cent per annum on eligible naira deposits and up to seven per cent per annum on eligible US dollar deposits. Actual rates depend on the deposit amount and tenor.
Interest rates for British pound and euro deposits are determined by the applicable amount and tenor. Qualifying US dollar placements exceeding $10 million may also attract negotiated rates, subject to Treasury approval.
The range of options enables customers to select deposit periods that align with their financial plans and the expected timing of their future expenses.
However, customers are advised to consider applicable terms, charges, taxes and prevailing market conditions before making deposit decisions.
Support for Cross-Border Financial Management
Managing finances across international borders can present challenges, particularly when customers need assistance with account opening, documentation, funding and deposit instructions.
Fidelity Bank’s Diaspora Banking team provides support to eligible customers through these processes, helping them manage their banking relationships while living and working outside Nigeria.
For Nigerians earning abroad but maintaining financial interests at home, such support can simplify the management of savings intended for family responsibilities, property investments, business activities and retirement planning.
The multi-currency structure also allows eligible customers to choose a deposit currency that suits their individual circumstances and financial objectives.
Expanding Diaspora Banking Beyond Money Transfers.
The growing importance of formal remittance channels presents opportunities for financial institutions to offer more comprehensive services to Nigerians living abroad.
Beyond facilitating transfers, banks can help diaspora customers explore options for saving, managing foreign currency balances and planning for future financial commitments in Nigeria.
Fidelity Bank’s refreshed Diaspora Fixed Deposit proposition is positioned to support this shift by combining multiple currency options, different deposit tenors and interest-bearing placements.
For customers, the decision involves assessing how much they can set aside, the currency they wish to maintain and when they expect to need the funds.
While fixed deposits can provide predictable interest returns under agreed terms, customers should also consider liquidity needs, exchange-rate movements and the conditions governing early withdrawal.
Ultimately, effective diaspora wealth management requires more than sending money home. It involves making informed financial decisions that align savings with future goals.
Through its Diaspora Banking services, Fidelity Bank is seeking to provide eligible Nigerians abroad with additional options for managing their finances and earning returns on funds reserved for future use.
Rates are per annum and are subject to applicable taxes, Treasury confirmation, market conditions and approval. Terms and conditions apply.
