The Spirits & Wines Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commended regulatory and enforcement agencies for intensifying efforts to combat illicit trade in alcoholic beverages, stressing that collaboration among government authorities, industry players and other stakeholders is crucial to protecting consumers.
In a statement issued by its Director General, Mr. Tony Okwoju, the association said recent seizures and arrests linked to counterfeit alcoholic products demonstrate the growing impact of coordinated enforcement efforts in identifying and disrupting illicit trade networks.
SWAN described illicit trade as a significant concern with serious implications for consumer safety, government revenue and legitimate businesses. It noted that recent enforcement successes show that sustained cooperation among relevant stakeholders is producing tangible results.
The association also highlighted investments by its member companies in brand protection, market surveillance, intelligence gathering and partnerships with relevant authorities to identify and tackle illicit activities.
Beyond supporting enforcement operations, SWAN said its members are implementing sustainable initiatives, including glass recovery projects, to promote environmental responsibility and reduce the circulation of empty bottles that could be reused for illicit refilling and counterfeiting.

The association called for responsible media reporting of enforcement activities, urging journalists and media organisations to distinguish accurately between counterfeit products and genuine brands. It warned that misleading reports could confuse consumers and undermine confidence in legitimate products.
Reaffirming the commitment of reputable producers to maintaining quality and safety standards, SWAN advised consumers to purchase alcoholic beverages from trusted and authorised retail outlets, ensure product packaging and seals are intact, and report suspicious products or suspected illicit trade activities to the appropriate authorities.
According to the association, sustained cooperation among government agencies, manufacturers, retailers, distributors, the media and consumers is essential to protecting public health, safeguarding government revenue, preserving jobs and supporting legitimate businesses.
As part of its stakeholder engagement efforts, SWAN said it had organised a workshop earlier in the year to address illicit trade in the alcohol industry. The event brought together representatives from government, the media and industry to examine the challenges posed by illicit trade and explore practical strategies for strengthening collective action.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regulatory and enforcement agencies through continued stakeholder engagement, intelligence sharing and consumer education.
It maintained that a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach remains vital to achieving lasting progress against illicit trade and preserving consumer confidence in established brands.
The Spirits & Wines Association of Nigeria represents businesses involved in the manufacturing, importation, distribution and marketing of spirits, wines and other alcoholic beverages in Nigeria. It promotes responsible drinking, supports legitimate industry practices and works with relevant stakeholders to combat illicit trade in the sector.
