US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that it was a “slap in the face to the victims of the October 7 attack”. On the other hand, Hamas welcomed Macron’s pledge as a “positive step in the right direction toward doing justice to our oppressed Palestinian people”. Other countries, such as Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia, have also recognized Palestinian statehood, with Saudi Arabia and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez supporting France’s move.

Israel currently occupies Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and has overseen a major expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which is considered illegal under international law.
