In Nigeria, a staggering 80% of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) lack access to formal credit, says MD NCGC Bonaventure Okhaimo, and actually hindering their growth and contribution to the economy. This limited access to credit is attributed to stringent collateral requirements, high interest rates, and lenders’ risk aversion.
The challenges faced by MSMEs include meeting collateral demands set by banks, high interest rates that can top 28%, lack of proper financial records, and banks’ risk aversion towards MSMEs. Many MSMEs struggle to secure loans due to these challenges, which can stifle innovation, limit job creation, and hinder economic growth.
To address this issue, the National Credit Guarantee Company (NCGC) provides partial credit guarantees to encourage financial institutions to issue loans to underserved MSMEs. The Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) offers financing products, such as term loans and working capital loans, with concessionary rates. Fintech innovations, including digital lending platforms and alternative credit scoring models, are emerging as potential solutions to increase MSME access to credit.

Government support schemes, such as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s SME Credit Guarantee Scheme and the Agric, Small, and Medium Enterprise Scheme (AGSMEIS), provide guarantees and concessionary financing for MSMEs. These initiatives aim to promote economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction by supporting MSMEs.
The impact of limited access to credit is significant, hindering MSMEs’ ability to create jobs, boost productivity, and contribute to economic growth. MSMEs are crucial to Nigeria’s economic development, employing a significant portion of the workforce and contributing to GDP. By supporting MSMEs, the government can help reduce poverty and promote economic development.
MDTo further address the issue, stakeholders are calling for increased funding, capacity building, and policy reforms to support MSMEs. This includes improving access to finance, providing business development services, and creating a conducive business environment. By working together, stakeholders can help unlock the potential of MSMEs and drive economic growth in Nigeria.
